Letters : to Samuel Francis and Catharine Walker, 1856 and 1861 or 1862? 1856-1861 or 1862?

Photocopies of two holograph letters accompanied by transcriptions by the donor. The earlier letter (dated Aug. 12, 1856) was written by James and Ann Walker and describes in detail various commodity prices and conditions in Hammondsburgh, Iowa. James and Ann give advice to Samuel and Catharine regarding the best time for them to move to Hammondsburgh, preparations they need to make for the journey, and directions for reaching their destination once they have crossed into Iowa at Burlington. The second letter (written by Sarah Walker) is undated but refers extensively to the Civil War and various family members involved in the fighting. Corinth (Mississippi?) is mentioned often. Sarah expresses concern for the well being of her loved ones involved in the war and a longing for the end of the fighting. She also touches briefly on the domestic tasks of molasses making and blanket weaving.
